How to Register a Hologram Trademark in Indonesia for Brand Protection

Register a hologram trademark

If you’re looking to register a hologram trademark, here’s the good news, holograms can be registered as trademarks in Indonesia. This isn’t an experimental idea anymore — it’s legally recognized.

The legal basis is found in Law No. 20 of 2016 Article 1 Paragraph (1), which lists holograms as a valid trademark form alongside logos, words, numbers, sounds, and 3D shapes. The requirements are further explained in Ministerial Regulation of Law and Human Rights No. 67/2016 Article 3–4, which specify that applicants must submit a hologram displayed from multiple angles along with a written description.

So as long as your hologram can be visually presented clearly and described objectively, it can be registered. The principle is straightforward.

What do you need to prepare?

Not much — but accuracy matters. These two points are the key:

1. Hologram images from multiple angles
Since a hologram changes when viewed from different perspectives, the IP Office must see it from more than one side. At minimum, include a front view, then add other angles such as left, right, top, or bottom.

2. A clear and non-ambiguous visual description
Explain what can be seen — colors, embossed effect, visual movement when the angle shifts. Keep it factual, no need for creative language.

After that, determine your goods/services class, complete the applicant details, and the submission is ready to be filed.

How long does the process take?

On average 10–13 months until the trademark certificate is issued, assuming there are no objections or document revisions. It makes sense — hologram trademarks are categorized as non-conventional, so the examination tends to be more detailed.

There’s no shortcut, but clean documentation helps prevent corrections and keeps everything moving smoothly.
